History & Legend
When the sage Dhavani was performing penance, a hunter came by carrying a deer. The sage, being compassionate towards the deer, tried to protect it. Angered by the sage's interference, the hunter aimed an arrow at the sage. Immediately, Lord Shiva intervened and stopped the hunter. The hunter then climbed a bilva tree nearby and hid himself among the leaves. The Lord, aware of the hunter's presence, pretended to look for him by shooting arrows at the tree. Each leaf that fell from the tree turned into a tiger and rushed towards the Lord, who calmly faced them. On that day, it was the great Shivaratri. As the fasting was causing the hunter to unknowingly commit a sin against Shiva, the Lord appeared before him and blessed him. Since it was time for the hunter's lifespan to end, Yama arrived. However, Nandi Deva intervened, preventing Yama from taking the hunter away. Annoyed by this, Yama aimed his staff at Nandi. In response, Nandi exhaled forcefully and immobilized Yama. Yama then bowed down to Shiva and departed. Following this incident, a temple was built, commemorating Shiva's intervention.
