History & Legend

In one era, Earth was carried by Adisesha, the king of serpents. Due to the misdeeds of the people, he couldn't bear the weight of the Earth. He suffered physically. Therefore, he went to Thirukovilur to seek Lord Shiva. He asked for the boon of bearing the burden of the world. Impressed by Adisesha's determination to relieve the world, Lord Shiva assured him that no matter how long it takes, with just one head, he would bear the weight of this world, symbolizing the determination. In the deluge era, the perfect Adisesha came to a part of Kumbakonam, where the Vilvam tree fell from the divine pot of nectar. There, he established the lingam and worshipped it. Due to the worship by Nagaraja, the name changed to Nageshwarar.+ +At one time, the Vilvam tree, which emerged from the divine pot in the floodwaters, fell incorrectly from the top of the Amuda Kumbham (divine pot of nectar) into the water. That place was called Vilvavanam. Since the temple was established there, Swamikku Vilvanesar, Pathala Beeganathar, and other names are also given. Names like Matanthe Pakar and Selvapiran are also given to Swami.
