History & Legend
Once, when the world was inundated with water and facing destruction, Brahma asked Shiva from where to start his creation. To this, Lord Shiva replied, "Take the sand from the sacred places where you have abundant merits and mix it with nectar and form a pot." Brahma followed this instruction, made a pot, filled it with nectar, and immersed the scriptures into it, signifying that knowledge should be spread like water. He also explained the method of immersing the pot in water without letting it overflow. Following this, Brahma made the pot and placed it in water, and the water receded. The pot settled in a certain place. Shiva then cast a beam of light on it, causing the pot's mouth to crack. The nectar inside the pot flowed out into four directions. The nectar mingled with silver and formed a lingam. This lingam came to be known as 'Kumbeswarar'.
