Once when Brahma went to Kailash, he failed to notice Murugan who was present there. Murugan, calling Brahma, asked, 'Who are you?' Brahma, introducing himself, said with pride, 'I am the one who created the world.'" +" Murugan asked him, 'On what mantra do you base your creation?' Brahma replied, 'It is based on the mantra 'Om'.' Murugan then asked for the explanation of that mantra. Brahma didn't know. Therefore, he placed a crest on Brahma's head and made him the creator. Knowing this, Shiva instructed Murugan to grant Brahma the position again. Murugan didn't ask further." +" Shiva, telling Murugan the meaning of the Pranava mantra, instructed him to meditate and then returned the position of Brahma to him. Though Brahma didn't understand the meaning of the Pranava, Murugan punished him for the mistake out of respect for his age. Therefore, Brahma performed penance to seek forgiveness for the mistake.
