History & Legend
During the time when the chariot festival of Thyagaraja Temple in Thiruvarur was being held, there lived a minister named Kandadevar. He went to collect stones from a hill for the construction of Thiruvarur Temple. He disappeared suddenly. He never ate without worshiping Shiva. Therefore, he always wandered like a beggar."
+"In his dream, Shiva appeared and said, 'I am right inside the banyan tree nearby. Come inside, I'll bless you.' When the minister went and saw, just as Shiva had said, there was a lingam inside the banyan tree. Immediately, he brought stones from Thiruvarur, along with a stone, a golden brick, and a golden vessel, and completed the temple construction and conducted the consecration ceremony."
+"Once, there was an incident at the sacred chariot of Thyagaraja where some events happened, so he wanted to see the temple. The angry king came and saw the temple and ordered the minister, 'You built this temple and performed rituals, what did you give me?' In response, the minister said, 'Lord, I'll give you my life instead of this righteousness,' causing the king to be enraged. Therefore, the king ordered to cut off his head in front of the temple. Following the king's command, his head was cut off."
+"With the head fallen to the ground, it merged into the earth, thus came the term 'Aandavan' (the one with a fallen head). Knowing this truth, the king repented and pleaded with a true Shiva devotee to behead him too, thinking of self-sacrifice."
+"Then, God appeared, and both the king and the minister were revived. Then, the king and the minister, both say, 'We must be like husband and wife.' Saying so, they offer their lives to the minister. From that day onwards, Aandavan Temple became popular.
