History & Legend

Once, doubts arose regarding the meticulousness of Chola Manadhan's treasurer Sudhanman. He provided a stern response demonstrating the accuracy of his accounts. Even after showing the correct accounts, when he suspected that a blame had fallen on him, he desired Lord Shiva's intervention. Immediately, he went to the king with his accounts and pleaded. The king, impressed with his honesty, along with Sudhanman, went to the temple. There, a name 'Ezhuthanathar' was found written. 'Ezhuthanathar' means the one who writes. This is because this is the place where Suyambulingam, who is also known as Thandonyeshar, taught grammar to Agastya. Ambal Konthar Kuzhalammayi, to give individual sanctity to Sugantha Kundalambal and Nithya Kalyani Amman, has two separate sanctuaries for the two Amblars. The sun was directed through this sanctum and received the highest brightness. He was named Inan as he believed in Surya as God. Because the sun believed in God, it was named Inanpur, but later it was changed to Inambur.
