About Sri Ekambareswarar Temple

The Raghu Kala puja, starting with great pomp, is first initiated in this temple. Even though it is a Sivan temple, the Kali Kambareswari shrine here also sees a congregation during the Raghu Kala period. It is imperative to worship Kali Kambareswari during the Raghu Kala period by paying homage to the Rajagana padai and conducting puja. In the kolam where the asura is slain, Kanyakaparameswari stands with eight arms as Ashtabuja Kali. She holds weapons such as a sword and a shield in her hands. Kali Kambareswari's shrine is located in front of the Ashtalakshmi Mandapam. The Nandi statue is placed there as a reminder of Ambal's role in destroying the Rudhiramsam. This temple is maintained by the Viswakarma community.

History & Legend

The community of Viswakarma believes that this temple was constructed by them. The family deity of the sculptors is Kamaatchi. When they initiate the construction of a temple, they start with the Kali statue. Many believe that when constructing temples in Kumbakonam, they can start building with the installation of the Kali deity. In this temple, they installed Ekambareswarar and their family deity Kamaatchi. Here, Kamaatchi receives more respect than Ekambareswarar. That's why only Kamaatchi leads the way to the Maha Magam tank from here.
