History & Legend
A girl named Thadagai used to worship the deity of this shrine daily. One day, while offering a garland to Shiva, her blouse slipped off. "
+"Embarrassed, she could not continue offering the garland with one hand holding her attire. Immediately, the deity adorned himself in such a way that he supported her head with his own. The girl then put the garland around his neck and bowed with joy. From that day on, the Shivalinga in this temple has been reclining. "
+"At that time, the temple was under the patronage of the Chola king. When the king heard of Shiva's gesture, he asked to see it. Immediately, he sent his crown to prop up Shiva's head. Elephants were brought to join the Linga with chains, but they couldn't move it. The king understood that Shiva was satisfied with this arrangement."
+"One of the 63 Nayanars, Kungiliyakkalayanar, came to worship Shiva at this temple. He offered the fragrance of his prayers by chanting the mantra 'Namah Shivaya' and offered incense to Shiva. Then, he took a piece of clay with a flower, tied it to the Linga, and tied another piece to his leg. "
+"As the clay hardened, his life was threatened. However, Nayanar was not worried. He tied his whole body to it and breathed his last. Shiva, touched by his devotion, did not want to test Nayanar further. The Linga remained stationary."
+"The king, moved by Kungiliyakkalayanar's devotion and Shiva's affection, honored him with many gifts and praised him.
