Sri Akshayanatha Swamy Temple

The wonder of the Chandra Pushkarani: Within this temple lies a Chandra Pushkarani, meaning a pond in the shape of the moon crescent. This pond experiences an extraordinary phenomenon, where water levels rise significantly during waxing moon days and decrease slightly during waning moon days. This miraculous occurrence has been happening for many ages. It is said that sages bathed in the sacred waters of this Chandra Pushkarani, and many mythological stories associate it with the blessings of celestial beings and the rejuvenation of planets. Increasing water levels during waxing moon and decreasing levels during waning moon are normal. However, what astonishes is that on the day of Amavasya in December 6, 2018, the day of new moon, water significantly receded in the pond, a rare event. This happened at a time when it was expected that water should have increased significantly, as is usual during days when water levels rise, particularly for visiting Gangaiyya Adiyanar. Instead, it was an unusual day of reduced water levels, marking a stark contrast to the days when water usually increases abundantly. On that day, the entire temple was surrounded by water.

Kumbakonam, situated in Thirumandurai, hosts the temple of Sri Akshaya Natha Swamy, which has a history of about 1200 years. It was renovated by Sembiyanmadeviyar. This temple belongs to the Thiruvaavaduthurai Adheenam. In an earlier era, the sage Kalamana suffered from a disease, as did the Navagrahas. Seeking a remedy, he worshipped Lord Shiva in the temple and performed puja at the Chandira canal within it. They immersed themselves in the waters of the Chandira canal for fifteen days, curing themselves of bodily ailments. Due to this, this temple is considered significant for those born under the Rohini Nakshatra.
