History & Legend
Once upon a time, all the villagers gathered at Kaveri River. They found a box floating in the Kaveri waters. When they opened the box, there was a statue of Goddess Kali inside it. Wondering what to do with the statue that was entirely made of marble except for a tiny part, everyone contemplated. Suddenly, a little girl appeared with wisdom and began to explain the specialties of the Goddess Kali. She was worshiped by King Vikramaditya himself. The king decided to split the statue into two parts and left one part in the river. Several years later, during a flood, the statue was carried to Kaveri Nagar, now known as Koranattukaruppur. Following the girl's instructions, the villagers established a separate shrine for the Goddess Kali, naming her Sundara Mahakali. They stopped the old ways of worship and started worshiping the Goddess with a new ritual. One night, they lit a lamp on the temple platform. Protecting the statue, the villagers fought somehow and managed to save the box. Then, they invited the head priest of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham to install the statue. This girl is now known as Thirupadalavanam, and her village became known as Kaliyur, Karuppur, and finally Koranattukaruppur today.
