History & Legend

In the path of yoga, this is the fundamental chakra for those who pursue spiritual practices. It has a total of six supports: the Muladhara, Svadhisthana, Manipura, Anahata, Vishuddhi, and Ajna. Among these six supports, this is the foundation chakra. It is the Sivathalam, which, by awakening the Kundalini energy, immediately provides various powers to those who ascend. Markandeya desires to extend his lifespan. Narada advises him to worship the lord in Thiruneelakudi. Markandeya visits there every day and meditates on Lord Shiva. Finally, Lord Shiva appears before him. He asks Markandeya what boon he desires." +" Markandeya expresses his desire, and as soon as he does, the Chiranjeevi status is conferred upon him in this chakra. Grateful, Markandeya places the lord in his armpit and travels to various towns such as Ilanthalai, Ennathimangalam, Thirunageswaram, Thirupuvanam, Thiruvidaimaruthur, and Maruthukudi, naming each town as he went. This event is commemorated as the festival of this chakra.
