History & Legend

During the deluge, Brahma placed the Vedas in a pot and kept it in an Amrita (nectar) pot. This pot floated in the floodwaters and eventually came to rest in the southern direction. To re-establish life, Lord Shiva used his bow to shoot an arrow into the pot of nectar. The parts of the pot dissolved in the water, and Lord Shiva manifested as a lingam, known as the Suyambulingam." +"The mouthpiece of the pot settled in this place. Lord Shiva manifested here as the Suyambu Murthy. During the Kali Yuga, this lingam was covered by sand. In the later ages, due to the prayer of Garuda's mother, Vinata, she became a slave due to a curse from her rival. To redeem his mother from slavery, Garuda went to Devaloka, obtained the pot of nectar, and brought it here. On his way back, he took a bath in this pond. At that time, a demon attempted to steal the pot of nectar." +"Garuda placed the pot of nectar on the eastern side of this pond and engaged in battle with the demon. After defeating him and returning to retrieve the pot, he found that it had disappeared into the pond. Realizing that his own ignorance caused the disappearance, he prostrated and worshipped the lingam that appeared in his hands. Lord Shiva appeared before him and gave him a vision. Garuda explained his mother's situation to Shiva, who then showed mercy and freed her from slavery. Garuda then erected a temple for Lord Shiva at this place.
