History & Legend

Prungyi Munivar , having arrived, worshiped only Lord Siva. Due to this, Parvathi became angry and insisted on performing severe penance for Ardhanareeswarar. Pleased with Parvathi's penance, Lord Siva granted her the boon of having him as her other half, sharing his body. It was required that Ardhanareeswarar's form be established in many parts of the world. Accordingly, in this place, Siva and Parvathi are depicted in the form of Ardhanareeswarar. The main deity is Lord Nageshwarar, who graciously blesses as Suyambumurthi, and the goddess is Piraiyanai Vadivudalai." +"Sugarmar, the son of the sage Sushilar (சுசீலர்), at one time ventured into the forest, where he encountered a snake called Dakkakan. Angered by this, the sage cursed Dakkakan to turn into a fierce man-eater. The sage's anger subsided only when his son pleaded on behalf of Dakkakan. Having received the curse of man-eating, Dakkakan sought advice from Kashipar (காசிபர்), the sage. Kashipar advised him to perform Siva worship and establish a lingam; if he followed this path, the curse would be lifted. Following the advice, Dakkakan came to the village and performed Siva worship. Lord Siva, pleased with him, appeared and relieved him of the curse. Thus, he was blessed in this tradition. Due to the grace bestowed upon him as a snake, he received the name 'Naganaathar'.
