Maharishi Medhavi was a great devotee of Maha Vishnu. He ardently wished to have him as his son and performed penance under the Vanchula tree. Mahalakshmi, delighted by Medhavi's devotion, incarnated as a young girl under the Uttara Nakshatra of the month of Uthira. Impressed by the devotion of Medhavi, she named the girl Vanchula Devi and nurtured her. After reaching marriageable age, she served at her father's ashram. Maha Vishnu, along with Sankarshana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and Purushottama, came searching for her to fulfill her wish for marriage. Each of them went in different directions to search. Karudazhvar, who came with them, saw Pratyusa's daughter, who had grown up in the ashram, and told Maha Vishnu about her. When Maha Vishnu came and asked Medhavi for her daughter's hand in marriage, he said, 'You should always obey her command. She should always be the most important person to you,' and gave his consent. Maha Vishnu agreed. The marriage took place in Karudazhvar's presence. Maha Vishnu said to him, 'Just as you grant grace to your devotees, you must also bestow grace upon me from here.' Therefore, he became the principal deity at this shrine, which was named as Nachiyar Kovil.
