History & Legend
Jalandharasuran, who was defeated by the divine weapon Sudarshana Chakra sent by Lord Vishnu, came to the earthly realm and submerged the earth in the Kaveri river. In the holy place of Kumbakonam, where divine merit prevails, the Sudarshana Chakra came into Brahma's hand. Delighted, Brahma consecrated the Sudarshana Chakra and worshipped it, which surpassed even the brightness of the Sun. Due to this, the Sun lost his radiance, feeling inferior to someone else shining brighter than him. In anguish, he hid his own light within himself. The Sun, although radiant, became dim compared to the resplendent Sudarshana Chakra. Immediately, the Sudarshana Chakra also enveloped its own light and protected itself. The Sun, feeling inferior, eagerly sought more light for himself. Hence, the Sudarshana Chakra surrendered itself again to provide light. On the Full Moon day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi, the Sudarshana Chakra, along with three eyes, eight hands, and blazing fiery hair, manifested as Sudarshana Perumal. The Sun received light. For this noble deed, the Sudarshana Perumal was enshrined in a temple by the Sun himself.
