History & Legend
During the deluge, it is said in the Puranas that Brahma took a handful of soil, created a mound, and placed the Vedas in it to preserve them. Once, Ganga Devi approached Perumal and praised herself saying, 'Everyone praises Ganga as the highest. If one bathes in her, sins will be washed away.' Perumal asked for proof of such greatness. With this request in mind, Ganga Devi performed penance under a fig tree on the eastern shore of the Sarapushkarani tank. Pleased with her penance, Perumal appeared as a baby in the middle of the Ganga river. Ganga Devi felt that this glory should not be just hers and asked for a boon. Perumal, along with Lakshmi, gave her five thousand lakshmis and asked her to choose the desired boon. In response, Ganga Devi asked for the privilege to always provide darshan in this same form in her waters. Perumal granted her request. Even today, we can see Ganga Devi standing on the right side of Perumal at the original spot.
