Sri Kola Villi Ramar Temple

Here, Karuda Alvar alone bestows his grace with the Sudarshana Chakra to four of the temples among the 108 divya desams. In this representation, we can see the appearance of Sudarshana Chakra emerging as a banana tree with its roots in black soil, and a tender shoot growing up every year to take the form of a banana plant. In this manifestation, the great deity stands facing east, holding a spear with a flag in the school.

Once, during the Mahavishnu's Vamana Avatar, Mahabali asked for three feet of land from Lord Vishnu. Not knowing Mahabali's true intentions, Guru Shukracharya, who was from the Asura clan, agreed to support him. However, the true-knowing guru Vishwakarma built a wall around Mahabali's Semputkudi, a place where the event was taking place, to prevent him from fulfilling his promise. Understanding the situation, Lord Vishnu, in the guise of a dwarf, obstructed the wall with a blade of grass and blinded Shukracharya's eye. Blinded, Shukracharya wandered through many places until he finally came to the Perumal's temple at the Semputkudi and regained his vision. This place came to be known as Velliyan Kudi, where Shukracharya came to perform penance. Another reason for his penance was that he had requested Brahma to perform a severe penance at the Semputkudi, believing that if Brahma performed severe penance there, everything would turn out well with the grace of the Lord. Delighted by Mayan's penance, Lord Perumal appeared as Sanku Chakrathari. However, Mayan, in response to this vision, desired to see the Rama Avatar. He handed over the Sanku Chakra from his hand to Garuda and appeared as Lord Rama with a bow and arrows, giving Mayan his vision. With great pride in this achievement, Shukracharya desired to perform penance here. This is the reason why it is called 'Velliyangukudi'.
