History & Legend
When Sage Brighu saw Lord Vishnu in the ocean, his wife, Mahalakshmi, offered him a garland as a mark of respect. Brighu then gave this garland to Lord Indra. Indra, in turn, placed it on the trunk of his elephant, and it was promptly crushed. Angered by this, Brighu cursed Indra to be born as an ordinary human in the earthly realm. Realizing his mistake, Indra sought forgiveness from Lord Vishnu, who advised him to go to Earth and seek Mahalakshmi's forgiveness. At that time, Mahalakshmi was born as Brighu's daughter. Perumal (Lord Vishnu) then married her off. When Indra came to this world, he paid his respects to both Perumal and Mahalakshmi. Perumal, pleased with him, showed him a vision in his divine abode and relieved him from the curse.
