History & Legend

During a time long ago, when the earth was submerged in a deluge, Brahma, feeling proud of his task of creation, approached Vishnu, saying that this power doesn't exist within Shiva. Vishnu, in response, sent a being to Brahma. Upon seeing this being, Brahma felt humbled and realized his mistake. He went to Vishnu and sought protection from the being he had sent, asking to be saved from his own arrogance. Vishnu then said, 'I sent this being to remind you. Due to your arrogance, the task of creation that you undertake will be forgotten,' and he cursed Brahma. Frightened by the curse, Brahma appealed to Vishnu for redemption. Vishnu replied that if Brahma performed penance on Earth, he would be redeemed.Brahma then came to Kumbakonam, a place unaffected by the deluge. He performed penance there during the time of a yuga, and thirty-three crore deities and sages also served him. During the yagna, Vishnu appeared, accompanied by Mahalakshmi. He relieved Brahma of his curse and revealed the Vedas again, thus acquiring the name Vedanarayana. His consort, the goddess, came to be known as Vedavalli. After the completion of the yagna, everyone gathered there took an auspicious bath, for which Vishnu, with his divine weapon, ploughed the earth to form a river. This river came to be known as Hari's utterance and became famous as Arasalaru in the Kali Yuga.
