History & Significance

According to Hindu mythology, during the great deluge (Pralaya), Lord Brahma collected sand from all sacred places and mixed it with divine nectar (amrut) to create a sacred pot (Kumbha). He floated this pot in the cosmic waters. Lord Shiva shot an arrow at the pot, and where it broke, the nectar spilled โ€” forming the Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam.

The name "Kumbakonam" itself derives from "Kumbha" (pot) and "Konam" (corner/angle), referring to the tilted pot from which the nectar flowed. The Mahamaham tank is believed to contain waters from all sacred rivers of India โ€” Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Narmada, Godavari, and others.

Every 12 years, when Jupiter enters Leo (Simha Rashi) and the Sun enters Aquarius (Kumbha Rashi) during the Tamil month of Masi, the sacred waters are believed to attain their peak spiritual potency. A holy dip during this celestial alignment is considered equivalent to bathing in all sacred rivers simultaneously.

The Mahamaham Tank โ€” 16 Sacred Theerthams

The Mahamaham tank spreads across 6.2 acres in the heart of Kumbakonam. It has 16 sacred wells (Theerthams) within it, each representing a holy river. The 16 mandapams (pavilions) around the tank are architectural marvels from the Chola and Nayak periods.
